Sometimes we all need a helping hand but our pride can get in the way or we just don't know where to start. To help we've created a guide of local agencies, hotlines, and support groups.  This list was originally created for those in Southern York County Area but you will also find info for organizations across York County.

Local Nonprofit & Government Organizations

YMCA Southern Community Services

Southern Community Services (SCS) is a United Way funded program that provides essential social and support services to low and moderate-income residents of southern York County living in the Southern, Southeastern, Dallastown, and Red Lion school districts.  For more than 30 years, SCS has assisted residents to overcome barriers and achieve a greater level of independence by educating individuals in financial literacy, supporting the application process for various government programs and offering limited direct financial assistance.

The program also assists families in crisis through life management programs like short-term counseling, food distribution, back-to-school and holiday programs.  Southern Community Services offers assistance in the following areas:  Case Management, Emergency Food Assistance, Energy Assistance, Rental Assistance, Budget Counseling, Baby Closet, Project E.L.V.E.S Help (holiday assistance) Daily Choice Food Pantry, Domestic Violence Assistance Homeless Assistance, Veteran Assistance. Pet Pantry. Back to School Program Government/Form Application Assistance.

The goal of SCS is to educate and empower clients to move them from poverty to sustainability. By providing case management services, SCS can help clients assess their current situation, develop a plan to overcome the challenges, coordinate services that can help them move forward, and oversee the implementation of the plan.  It is only through the support of the community that SCS can provide these services. Many community organizations such as churches, local municipalities, schools and individuals, give of their time and financial resources to support this program.

Applicants must provide a valid photo ID and proof of address, as well as the names and birthdates for every person residing in the household. Because we do provide state food through our pantry services, all clients must sign the "Self-Declaration of Eligibility" form required by the state. Pantry food donations are distributed as the inventory is available.

BAGS OF BLESSINGS

Extra holiday meal items are provided for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter; donations of hams and turkeys are needed for this program each fall and spring. Please call for a list of specific items needed or to register.  Donations are requested beginning in October and continuing through the first week of December, and then again in February for the Easter distribution.

WARM PROGRAM

We distribute blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, sweaters, and some coats or jackets, as donations allow, during the fall and winter seasons. Donations of these items are accepted during regular office hours on any weekday morning.

PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN

We provide donated school supplies and backpacks for students' Back-to-School needs.
Kids' Kafe distributes extra bags filled with kid-friendly items each week to nearly 100 children during the summer months; donations are needed beginning in May and continuing thru mid-July.

Contact the office for a list of needed items and to volunteer to help with any of these programs.
