By York County Libraries March 30, 2022

Several service changes will go into effect Monday, April 4 at Kaltreider-Benfer Library in Red Lion in preparation for construction. According to Kaltreider-Benfer Library Executive Director Don Dellinger there will be changes over the next several months as the library expands and renovates its building.

Starting April 4th, only the front part of the library will be open for member use. Holds pickup and other services will be offered at the circulation desk and five public computers will be available. In addition, a selection of materials will be accessible for browsing in the front section of the library. This will include some new adult fiction & nonfiction, new children’s fiction & nonfiction, adult audio books, & adult large print books. Full details are available at the library and online at yorklibraries.org.

The library will be open during its regular operating hours: Monday & Wednesday 9:00 a.m.- 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Community members with questions should call the library at (717) 244-2032.

“Kaltreider-Benfer Library is the third of our campaign building projects to get underway. Kreutz Creek Library is now complete, and Martin Library is slated to be finished this spring,” says York County Libraries President Robert F. Lambert. “We are excited to see the upcoming transformation of Kaltreider-Benfer Library. It will be expanding to the rear, growing from 10,000 to nearly 13,800 square feet to provide additional resources and programming for the community.”

Construction at the library will begin next month with select interior demolition and will later include a partial roof replacement, comprehensive interior renovations and a 3,763-sq-ft addition. The expanded facility will feature dedicated children and teen program spaces and a relocated open service desk area to centrally assist members. The library’s last update was 22 years ago when it made the move from its former building on the corner of West Broadway and South Charles Street to its current location beside Fairmount Park. Warehaus was engaged to reimagine and design the library, and Kinsley Construction, Inc. will deliver the finished project which is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2023.

Funds for all three projects were raised through the “Imagine. Discover. Connect.” capital campaign. The realized combination of local support, matching grants, and the Financial Assistance of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Honorable Tom Wolf, Governor are making the library transformations a reality.
